History of International Men’s Day

The idea of International Men’s Day was first proposed by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, professor f History at the University of the West Indies in T&T (Trinidad and Tobago). In 1999, he proposed celebrating IMD on November 19th to commemorate his father’s birth anniversary. Dr. Teelucksingh’s vision for IMD was to create a day that would focus on the issues affecting men and boys, such as health, education, and social justice.

Significance of International Men’s Day

IMD is important for several reasons:

  • It highlights the positive contributions of men and boys to society. Men play a vital role in their families, communities, and workplaces. They are fathers, husbands, brothers, sons, friends, and colleagues. They are teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and entrepreneurs. They are artists, musicians, athletes, and writers. They are the backbone of society, and their contributions should be recognized and celebrated.

  • It raises awareness of the issues facing men and boys. Men and boys face a number of challenges, including mental health issues, suicide, violence, and discrimination. IMD is an opportunity to bring these issues to light and to start conversations about how to address them.

  • It promotes gender equality. IMD is not about pitting men against women. It is about creating a more equitable world for everyone. By celebrating the positive contributions of men, we are also taking a step towards achieving gender equality.
