What the rule says : ICC rule for timed out – “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 2 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
In the world cup one of the most shameful wickets that Bangladesh took today was the time out of Angelo Mathews. When Mathews was ready to face the ball, he found his Helmet strap is broken. HE called for a new helmet and in the meantime Bangladesh Bowler Shakib appealed to the umpire for a wicket under the “Time Out Rule”. Umpires after a brief discussion declared Mathews out without facing a ball.
Mathews tried to talk to Shakib, however he flatly refused to talk and asked him to talk to umpires about it. The incident triggered discussion on social media, as it was the matter of safety of the player and the delay was not intentional. He has taken the stance and was ready to face the ball. However before the ball was bowled he found his safety gear compromised. The gentle man’s game is hurt by the forceful use of a Rule. This may have been disastrous if the player has faced the ball with defective helmet and the ball may have hit the batter on the head.
Social media is flooded with comments against Shakib and even the commentators claimed this shameful incident and against the spirit of the game.
