FDA warns about Probiotics to Preterm Babies

The US Food and Drug Administration issue warning to campanies including Abbott Laboratories and Infinant Health of Norwalk, Connecticut.

The move came after one death and more than 2 dozen injury reports since 2018 in premature infants.

FDA said that no probiotic products have been approved as a drug or treatment for babies.

Abbott Laboratories agreed to halt the sales of its Similac Probiotic Tri-Blend product.

Probiotic supplements may help prevent Necrotizing enterocolitis affecting premature infants.

The condition affects upto 9000 infants per year.
